5 Essential Ways to Care for Your Skin in the Summer

It’s summertime in most parts of the world now, and I’m sure you’re all ready for some frolicking and poolside fun! But with summer also comes the harsh sun and dehydration.  As someone who comes from a country with perpetual sun and humidity, I have put together a few essential skincare tips to help you safeguard your skin against the harsh climate.
 
 

1.      Apply Sunscreen

This is by far the most important aspect of skincare in the summer! The sun can cause all kinds of damage to your skin, including hyper-pigmentation and premature ageing. Always, always slather on an SPF of at least 30, and remember to reapply every couple of hours.
 

2.      Use a Foaming Cleanser

At the end of a long, hot day, you need to wash off all the sunscreen, sweat, and dirt off your face, so that your pores stay clean and clear, which in turn keeps your skin feeling fresh and blemish-free. If you suffer from dry skin, switch to a cream cleanser in the mornings, so as not to strip your skin of essential moisture.
 
 

3.       Exfoliate!

Sometimes, a foaming cleanser is not enough when you need to clean out your pores, especially from slapping on all that sunscreen. Clogged pores can lead to a lot of unwanted skincare problems like whiteheads, blackheads and acne. This is where a good exfoliator comes in. You can use a physical scrub, like the Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub, or you can go the milder route and try a daily exfoliant like the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant.
 
 

4.       Use Lightweight, Oil-Free Products

Unless your skin is insanely dry, it’s usually best to use lightweight products in the summer. Products that are too rich and heavy can cause congestion and clog up your pores. Look for oil-free moisturisers and stick to sheer coverage foundations – areas of your face that need higher coverage can be disguised using a good concealer. A great product to use is a tinted moisturizer – that way you won’t need to add an extra layer of foundation on top of your sunscreen and foundation.
 
 

5.       Stay Hydrated!

Water is the easiest and most effective way to keep your skin healthy, no matter what the season. You tend to lose a lot of water in the summer through sweat, so staying hydrated is extra important. Make sure you eat a lot of fruit and always carry a water bottle around with you so that you can take continual sips to get yourself hydrated.
